I originally was going to pass on submitting a project to ITP’s Winter Show because I hadn’t completed too many substantial projects this semester, but I thought I might as well submit something, no matter how small or unimpressive.
I decided to submit the headpiece I made for Ali Santana’s Alter Egos class. I planned on displaying the headpiece, a video reel of some moments from the performance two weeks prior, as well as some props used in the performance.
Big Josh is an alter-ego created for Ali Santana's "Alter Egos" class. On display is the headpiece created for Big Josh's final performance, an audio/visual experience in collaboration with Baby Yu (Yu-Ying Lee) featuring songs "I Love Dogs" and "Baby Wants Cake (I'm Just a Baby)". Inspired by French performance artists Clédat & Petitpierre, this headpiece is created from ruffled tulle and black metal mesh, arranged in a pattern representing a cartoon version of "regular" Josh's head, complete with round gold glasses and a bright yellow hat. Big Josh explores the introspective act of performing an exaggeration of your own identity. The performance questions what creating a spectacle of the ordinary looks like to an audience and feels like for a performer.
It's Josh, but Big.
This project is a performance project with a heavy costuming component. Technically it does nothing, but it does augment the experience of the performer using it and the audience watching it.
Within the scope of the Winter Show I would just like to display the headpiece from the performance. In addition to the headpiece I would potentially display a looping video from the final performance for the class.
